Steam Surprise! |
Description: |
While coming into Bristol I noticed one of the engines from the "Welsh Marshes Express" we saw earlier in Bath was alone on a siding. I thought to myself "That's weird. Why would they take one engine off?" After thinking for a second I suddenly realized "UNLESS THEY'RE PUTTING A STEAM ENGINE ON!!!!!!" I leapt up from my seat to grab my camera and sure enough waiting to be put on the train was BR Standard Class 7 #70000 "Britannia", a 1951 product of British Railways' Crewe Works. |

Severn Bridge Junction Signal Box |
Description: |
This tower (Signal Box in UK Parlance) was built in 1902 and is still active. Today only approximately half of the levers are in operational use, although it still takes two signalers to operate the complete system. Network Rail currently believes that to simplify this system to allow it to be remotely controlled through color-light signals would not be economical. Hence the current mechanical signalling system in the area is presently envisaged to remain in operation until at least 2030, and possibly as long as 2050. (info via Wikipedia) |
